Shoplifting Prevention Programs

Retailers can only do so much to ensure that their businesses are not being stolen from. Therefore, it is important to remember that preventing shoplifting begins with education. The National Association for Shoplifting Prevention (NASP) has been setting the standard for research-based shoplifter education programs since 1977. Their SA Course and Y.E.S. Program, aimed at curbing thieving impulses, have proven effective time and time again with court-documented results.

Shoplifter's Alternative

If you are an adult who has recently been charged with shoplifting and need or simply want to attend educational classes, the NASP offers a program aimed at teaching shoplifters to understand and deter their impulses. The NASP claims that shoplifting comes as a response to other mental stress factors, which one must cope with first in order to prevent shoplifting. The Shoplifter's Alternative course is completed at home, with a workbook and two audio CDs. It takes roughly five or six hours to complete, and the cost is $75. Shoplifter's Alternative can be ordered by calling 1-800-848-9595.

Y.E.S. Program

If you are a the parent of a juvenile facing shoplifting charges, the NASP also offers a course aimed at teaching children to understand their impulses and the effects their actions have on society. The Y.E.S. Program (or Youth Educational Shoplifting Program) follows the same format as Shoplifter's Advantage. For $75, you receive two audio CDs and a workbook that your child can use to help understand their actions and to prevent them from repeating these mistakes in the future. The Y.E.S. Program can be ordered by calling 1-800-848-9595.

Whether you are an adult facing shoplifting charges or the parent of an unruly juvenile, the National Association for Shoplifting Prevention has designed several programs aimed at helping perpetrators overcome their impulses. These programs have been around since 1977, and have proven effective in court-ordered cases. Contact NASP for more information about these and other services offered.
