How to Prevent Shoplifting

Shoplifting is a serious problem for all retailers. It is an issue that affects all consumers, because retailers must increase their prices to compensate for objects that are stolen. Although shoplifting is a difficult issue, there are steps retailers can take to prevent some instances of shoplifting.

1. First: Put up signs

   Post signs in the store to let potential shoplifters know that shoplifting is a serious offense, and that anyone caught shoplifting on the premises faces punitive action. Signs such as these can act as a deterrent in some cases.

2. Second: Use security devices on merchandise

   It is possible to attach various types of security devices to the merchandise in a store that can set off an alarm if the item is taken from the store before payment is made and the device is removed. These devices can help catch a shoplifter in the act, as long as there are not so many false alarms that the employees ignore the alarm.

3. Third: Install security cameras

   Place security cameras in strategic locations to monitor the activities of shoppers in the store. Using these cameras, it is possible to catch a shoplifter in the act of pocketing items, and the camera can record the incident, so that ready-made evidence is available when the matter goes to court.

4. Fourth: Have enough employees on the selling floor

   Hire enough sales people to circulate throughout the store. Potential shoplifters are less likely to pocket items if they think store employees are nearby, and they run the risk of getting caught.

5. Fifth: Keep employee morale high

   An often neglected issue is the unfortunate reality of employee theft. This is often a large source of loss of merchandise and other assets. Put company policies in place to prevent such theft; however, do not make employees feel like they are looked at as criminals. Along with a clear policy which states that employees are held to the same standards as shoppers when it comes to theft, a high level of trust and respect demonstrated toward employees goes a long way in preventing internal shoplifting.
